When Mexico gained independence and then became a Republic in 1824. The government had concerns about it land in the provence of Texas. Not many people lived there. So they gave away land to anybody who would live there. Free land if you were a Mexican citizen, Catholic, and would obey the laws. Lots of Americans took advantage of this. They agreed to the rules and started farming in Texas. They got away with having slaves and not converting to Catholicism because they were so far away from Mexico City. A man named Santa Ana decided to overthrow the government of Mexico an make himself dictator. He wanted to enforce the rules and get control over all of Mexico. So the Americans who got the land for free and weren't keeping their promises stared thinking about revolt. Santa Ana was a bit of a jerk and didn't like democracy. So that made it easier for the Texans to think they could keep their slaves and break away from Mexico.
