OpenStudy (wormynut):

Hi! I newly started practical experiments in my school chem lab and we had to do various tests. One of them was the test of nitrate salt. I was wondering if there were some ways to always get the correct reaction? Like, how much acid should I pour into the salt and stuff. That's because I randomly got my my reaction at the first try but my friend who tried more than 5 times couldn't get her reaction right although we did the same step with same substances. Please help so that I get all my experiments correctly working. Thanks.

Are you talking about the confirmatory ring test?

OpenStudy (lncognlto):

@wormynut Unfortunately there isn't a set amount of acid you should use; this very much depends on how much salt you are using. Your school/chemistry manual should provide this type of information. Also, as a chemistry major, sometimes reactions just don't work and there's no set reason for it. it seems challenging at first, but you get the hang of it.
