OpenStudy (englishstudent2):

John hadn't planned to go to the party. He went anyway and had a great time. Which sentence correctly joins the clauses above without changing their meaning? A) John hadn't planned to go top the party, but he went anyway and had a great time. B) John hadn't planned to go to the party he went anyway; and had a great time. C) John hadn't planned to go to the party instead he went anyway and had a great time. D) John hadn't planned to go; to the party he went anyway and had a great time.

OpenStudy (savannah_noelle):

I would say A is the answer.

OpenStudy (wcrmelissa2001):

A is right For B is sounds weird. It should be something like John hadn't planned to go to the party BUT he went anyway.... For C) the use of the word 'instead' is wrong. I'd only use instead if the sentence is like 'John hadn't planned to go to the party, instead he went to surf or something For D) I'm pretty sure that's not how you use a semicolon
