@openstudier013087

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

so first you need converting these unit measure from feet and inches on yard

OpenStudy (math&ing001):

Hi @Kikuo Can you first compute the volume of the desired slab in cubic inches (in^3)

OpenStudy (kikuo):

I'm not sure how @math&ing001

OpenStudy (math&ing001):

First convert the dimentions to inches 11 ft = .... in. then multiply volume = height * width * lenght

OpenStudy (welshfella):

no - its easier to convert to inches as math suggested

OpenStudy (kikuo):

@welshfella Ah, how do we do so?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

11 feet = 11 * 12 = 132 inches so volume of slab in cubic ins is 132*132*3 1 cu yd = 36^3 cu inches so cost of slab = 132*132*3 --------- * 63 36^3

OpenStudy (kikuo):

I understand the 11 feet=132 inches But I'm not sure what you're doing after that @openstudier013087

OpenStudy (kikuo):

@latinC

OpenStudy (kikuo):

I don't understand the 1 cu yd=36&3 cu inches and how you calculated the cost of the slab

OpenStudy (openstudier013087):

There are 36 inches in a yard and they want cubic inches which is why they cubed it

OpenStudy (kikuo):

Hm, still a bit confused.

OpenStudy (openstudier013087):

So you have to convert all the measurements into inches

OpenStudy (openstudier013087):

11 feet into inches is 11x12=132

OpenStudy (kikuo):

Alright. That part makes sense. Continue : )

OpenStudy (openstudier013087):

So there are 36 inches in a yard and it costs $63 per CUBIC yard

OpenStudy (openstudier013087):

Since it says cubic yard you need to cube 36 to convert it

OpenStudy (kikuo):

Ah I get it. Alright, how do we convert?

OpenStudy (openstudier013087):

And they divide the two numbers because they want to see how many time the concrete reaches 1 cubic yard

OpenStudy (openstudier013087):

36^3 is the conversion for 1 cubic yard

OpenStudy (openstudier013087):

into inches

OpenStudy (kikuo):

And they divide the two numbers because they want to see how many time the concrete reaches 1 cubic yard I didn't understand this part. I understood what you said about the cubic yard.

OpenStudy (openstudier013087):

Okay, let's think of it this way. So the unit cubic yard is used for volume. And the 1 cubic yard is 36 cubic inches. We can also think of a cube with 36 cubic inches for each side and the volume of that would be 36^3

OpenStudy (openstudier013087):

The reason they divided that and then multiplied $63 was like you would in this situation: 2 apples cost $2 but you want to buy 5 apples. You would then do 5/2 and then multiply by $2 and would get $5

OpenStudy (openstudier013087):

Does that make a little more sense?

OpenStudy (kikuo):

Almost. Just need to understand the division and multiply by 63 part.

OpenStudy (openstudier013087):

Okay, so 132x132x3=52272 and 36^3 is 46656, so that means the volume of the concrete that they need is 52272 cubic inches and it costs $63 to buy one slab of concrete that has 46656 cubic inches

OpenStudy (openstudier013087):

So you divide 52272 by 46656 and multiply by 63 in order to find the total amount of money it costs to buy the concrete they need

OpenStudy (kikuo):

I believe I understand. Mind helping me with some more questions?
