spanish is pretty dry. in the language section anyone have any knowledge that will help me with a Spanish II study guide?
ill post some of the review questions
Do you need help with that specific question ?
yes
its one I'm stuck on
Okay. So can you translate each sentence?
Not using google translate ;)
alberto ? to the music of the party and ? the house
what does OYÓ mean
Oyó comes from the verb oir which means to hear. Do you know what tense it is conjugated in?
preterite el ella usted form
Good! It is in el ella usted because it is referring to Alberto who is an "el". And yes it is the preterit. Are you familiar with another tense that is also in the past but not the preterit?
imperfect? or conditional?
Imperfect yes! Conditional is another story that I can get to later if you would like. Since both the preterit and imperfect are in the past, do you know how to pick between the 2?
preterite is when they state like "he spoke" and imperfect is saying it more like "he used to speak"
Yup. It's like background or more of an ongoing action. Preterit is like a one time, completed action. For example, me rompí la pierna (i broke my leg). You broke it once and the action is completed. But if you said for example, yo comía la comida (i was eating the food) it's more of like a background and ongoing action, was eating versus ate. Does this make sense?
yes
Okay so back to the sentences. Oyó means heard not was hearing or anything like that. It's a completed action. So Alberto heard the party music and left (salir-to leave) the house. Correct so far?
yes
Cool. Now give a go at the next sentence. I'll give you a hint. Oir is conjugated in the imperfect in that one.
once alberto heard the party music he left the house?
or close? to that
Close.. Oía in this sentence would translate to Alberta was hearing the party music ______________. Do you know what cuando means?
The second sentence is a fairly common one that you might see a lot.
when
isn't that the meaning
Yes. So it translates to Alberto was hearing the party music when he left the house. Salir is still in the preterit for this one. (Because he left. That is a completed action.) But hearing is not really complete because it lasted for a while. Does that make sense?
yes so the difference is how the word is used in the preterite form and imperfect from it changes the translation meaning drastically and include the different translations?
Yup. If you compare: Alberto heard the party music and left the house. to Alberto was hearing the party music when he left the house. You can tell they are quite different in meaning.
yea conjugations are weird i wish we were taught 2 languages in early schooling.....
And just some extra info on the second sentence. When there is a verb conjugated in the imperfect and then a cuando (when) and a verb conjugated in the preterit like you saw in the 2nd sentence that's referred to as an interrupter. There's many examples like i was eating when the phone rang or stuff like that. The first verb (eating) would be in the imperfect, then you would have cuando, and the second verb (phone rang) would be in the preterit. Just a tip for those kinds of sentences
Yeah i feel ya. I'm finishing my 4th year of spanish now >.<
