OpenStudy (pphalke):

what is the difference between a permutation and a combination? give an example of each

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

On practically all lockers (maybe there are some where they don't have this?) there are combination locks https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a1/Masterpadlock.jpg but this is a misnomer. It really should be called a permutation lock because order matters. Eg: the sequence `29-14-10` is different from `29-10-14` With permutations, order matters. Combinations don't have to worry about the order of the terms.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so the "combination" lock, which is really a permutation lock, is a good example of a permutation

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Can you think of another permutation example?

OpenStudy (pphalke):

no

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

do you recall the batting order problem? that was a permutation problem since the order of the batters matter

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

I'm sure the section of the textbook you're at has tons of other examples
