Can someone please help me calculate the unknown side x for the triangle below? (In comments)

OpenStudy (stephanie7872):

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Use the pythagorean theorem. The two legs are 3 and 6, so a = 3 and b = 6. The longest side is unknown. It is x. Since c is the longest side, this means c = x a^2 + b^2 = c^2 3^2 + 6^2 = x^2 9 + 36 = x^2 ... ... ... x = ???

OpenStudy (stephanie7872):

27?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

9+36 is 27, yes, so x^2 = 27 x = ???

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

hint: try to undo the squaring

OpenStudy (stephanie7872):

= 3sqrt(3), -3sqrt(3) ?

OpenStudy (stephanie7872):

I'm not very good at this

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

3sqrt(3) is the only practical answer because x is a length. Lengths can't be negative

OpenStudy (stephanie7872):

Oh ok, so the 3sprt(3) is the answer since it cant be negative? Thank you so much!
