WILL MEDAL AND FAN BEST ANSWER PLEASE! HURRY! How much work is accomplished when a force of 250 N pushes a box across the floor for a distance of 50 meters? A. 12,500 J B. 5 N C. 12,500 N D. 5 J

OpenStudy (photon336):

\[Work = Force*distance*\angle~betwn~applied~force~and~direction~of~motion\] \[W = FdCos(\phi)\] |dw:1467396430702:dw|

OpenStudy (starleeandfelix):

12,500? Idk how to figure out J or N either. I think J? because its power, and power is how much work is accomplish, I think?

OpenStudy (starleeandfelix):

Idk what N is tho

OpenStudy (starleeandfelix):

@Photon336

OpenStudy (photon336):

You have the right formula. remember we're talking about work the angle is 0 btw. you already know the applied force F and the distance in meters d.

OpenStudy (photon336):

all you have to do is plug it into the formula.

OpenStudy (starleeandfelix):

Hm.. Ok this is hard DX Sorry, my brain is a little below average, at least in science and math. The applied force is 250 N and the distance is 50 meters, and up there you put * so my mind put it as multiply, if not that idk what we're doing.

OpenStudy (photon336):

yeah don't worry. just tell me where you are confused

OpenStudy (photon336):

so do you know the definition of what work is?

OpenStudy (starleeandfelix):

I thought that we multiplied 250 and 50, so that equals 12,500. But how do I know if its J or N? Am I even doing it right?

OpenStudy (photon336):

yeah that's right but also make sure you keep track of your units.

OpenStudy (photon336):

remember in \[Work~W = Force*Distance = Newtons*Meters \]

OpenStudy (photon336):

so your units will be Newtons~meters which equal work

OpenStudy (photon336):

AKA Joules

OpenStudy (starleeandfelix):

Oh Does * equal multiplication?

OpenStudy (photon336):

yep

OpenStudy (starleeandfelix):

Oh okay

OpenStudy (photon336):

this means that we are applying a force over a distance

OpenStudy (photon336):

that's the definition of work

OpenStudy (starleeandfelix):

Why is It J (Joules?) and not N (Newtons?)

OpenStudy (photon336):

Joules = Newtons*meters

OpenStudy (starleeandfelix):

OOHH!! That makes so much more sense.

OpenStudy (starleeandfelix):

I understand this now. Thank you so much!

OpenStudy (photon336):

no problem
