I have to disagree with afore mentioned analysis on the discrepancies between poetry and music. I think you're trying to compare two very different things. Poetry is the words that we form in an organized manner to express emotion while music is an effort to do the same using melodies, bass lines, harmonies, etc. It's the combination of the two that creates a powerful way to express your thoughts and feelings. In many ways you could think of poetry as an unfinished song but I suppose you could think of music without words in the same way. I think you're question may be focused more towards 'is there a difference between writing simple poetry or forming a song.' If this is the case, I would say yes there is. Only in that typically a song can be born from a combination of melodies and harmonies to inspire lyrics. While poetry has to have it's own motivation and inspiration without the aid of music. Hope this helps!
