The 13 colonies are in the middle of their war for independence. The fledgling Colonial army was continually losing battles to the superior British army and their Hessian mercenaries. The rag-tag band of fighters were entering the second winter of the war and many American troops were without shoes or sufficient clothing. The United States desperately needed help.
Many soldiers were leaving because they couldn’t afford to look after their families and fight for the nation’s freedom. George Washington, the leader of the continental army, appealed to his financial advisor Robert Morris for $20,000 because many of his soldiers were going unpaid and the army needed supplies. Robert Morris informed George Washington that the treasury was empty. George Washington knew just who to go to — Haym Salomon. Morris was opposed to going to Salomon because he was a Polish Jew, but Washington knew that Salomon was a devoted patriot. Salomon raised $20,000 on the spot.
Salomon joined the Sons of Liberty and was due to be incarcerated by the British army for spying, but due to his vast linguistic knowledge, he was pardoned on the condition that he would serve as a translator between the British and Hessian troops on a boat in New York harbour. While on the ship, Salomon won many of the Hessians over to the American side because he could speak German. He encouraged many of these mercenaries to desert the British army and join the fight for American independence as well as helping some American prisoners escape with the deserters.
After his release the next year, he continued serving the Continental Army by sheltering injured American troops in the basement of his home, but a neighbour saw him and he was arrested by the British army. This time he was sentenced to be hung, but he managed to escape be befriending and bribing a Hessian guard.
He escaped to Philadelphia and Morris gave Salomon an important role dealing as a financial ambassador with the French and Dutch forces. By the end of the war, Haym Salomon had donated over $650,000 (over $17 million today) out of his own pocket to the American cause and was instrumental in helping the 13 colonies to defeat the British and establish themselves as the United States of America.
