OpenStudy (impracticaljoker):

Solve for x: −2x + 5 < 7 (1 point) x > −1 x < −1 x > −6 x < −6

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

What do you think you do first?

OpenStudy (impracticaljoker):

I was thinking that < would act as a = sign so subtract 5 on both sides?

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

Yep! The only difference is that if you divided or multiply by a negative you flip it

OpenStudy (impracticaljoker):

so -2x > 2

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

Yeah! Now you would?

OpenStudy (impracticaljoker):

divide -2 on both sides?

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

Yup and because you are dividing by a negative you would flip it

OpenStudy (impracticaljoker):

I don't have my caculator.

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

So x > -1

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

Hope that helped ^-^

OpenStudy (impracticaljoker):

Thanks! Can you help me with a couple more?

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

Sure!

OpenStudy (impracticaljoker):

Should I open a new thread or post it here?

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

I think your suppose to open a new one but here is fine c:

OpenStudy (impracticaljoker):

Ok

OpenStudy (impracticaljoker):

This one is a little more complex Solve for x: 3 − (2x − 5) < −4(x + 2) (1 point) x < −8 x > −8 x < −3 x > −3

OpenStudy (impracticaljoker):

I don't know where to start

OpenStudy (impracticaljoker):

Im guessing you're baffled as well.

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

Oh wait no I was getting distracted

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

First you would distribute the negative sign on the left side

OpenStudy (impracticaljoker):

how? .-.

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

Okay it' does sound a little confusing let me draw a picture

OpenStudy (impracticaljoker):

ok

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

|dw:1472234634590:dw| So the 3 just stays and you multiply everything in the parenthesis by that negative sign but the trick to remember is that the negative sign secretly has a one so it is a -1
