halp me plz...

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Oh this one from earlier

OpenStudy (yumyum247):

yeah but this is prally the only quesiton i didn't understand...

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Have you learned anything about the derivative shortcut rules? Power rule? Whether you have or not doesn't really matter... Let's just recall that when lines are parallel, `they have the same slope values`.

OpenStudy (yumyum247):

ok ser!!

zepdrix (zepdrix):

So what's the slope of y=-5x-1 ?

OpenStudy (yumyum247):

the only thing that throws me off is the fact that they haff already fiven us the equation of the tangent line which is y = -5x-1... and then they asked us to find the equation of the tangent line?!?!? like ?????

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Notice that -5x-1 `is not tangent` to the curve that was given. It passes through the curve, but it is not tangent to it.

zepdrix (zepdrix):

There is a line with the same slope value, same `slantiness`, but located somewhere else, which is tangent to the curve.

zepdrix (zepdrix):

So what's the slope of y=-5x-1 ?

OpenStudy (yumyum247):

ooooooo eye see now... i forgot the definition of tangent for a sec..i thought the given equation was the tangent...lol good eyes

OpenStudy (yumyum247):

-5

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Good. So our tangent line will be of the form \(\large\rm Y=mx+b\) And we know that the tangent line has same slope as that other line,\[\large\rm Y=-5x+b\]

OpenStudy (yumyum247):

so at the point of intersection, the slope of the line is -5... when x = 0

zepdrix (zepdrix):

When x=0? Whu?

OpenStudy (yumyum247):

oh sheet, sorry...

zepdrix (zepdrix):

The tangent line... and the curve... will share one special point. It's the point where the tangent line touches the curve. In this problem they told us that the tangent line touches the curve at x=2. Let's find the coordinate point that `both` the curve and the tangent line share. \(\large\rm y=-4x^2+11x-2\) What y value do you get when you plug x=2 into this?
