helllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllp

OpenStudy (jalil.h):

@jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

please post the question

OpenStudy (jalil.h):

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

how far did you get with this one?

OpenStudy (jalil.h):

i think it 12 times x =23

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what is the unknown information?

OpenStudy (jalil.h):

11

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

well before you determine the t shirt costs 11 dollars

OpenStudy (torvela):

. . . jalil i just helped you with this question

OpenStudy (jalil.h):

im checking to get this right

OpenStudy (torvela):

ok

OpenStudy (jalil.h):

@jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

What's the unknown information? The known information is that the book costs $12

OpenStudy (jalil.h):

ok

OpenStudy (jalil.h):

is it 11

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

11 is a number. I'm asking about what that number stands for

OpenStudy (jalil.h):

x

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

x represents what? the cost of ______ (fill in the blank)

OpenStudy (jalil.h):

23 dollars

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

no

OpenStudy (jalil.h):

11

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

cost of book = 12 cost of _____ = x total cost = 23

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Keep in mind that your math course is Algebra. A basic concept of Algebra is that we represent quantities (numbers, measurements) using letters such as x, y, z, a, b, c. You MUST learn how to write algebraic equations based upon the stories given you. Guessing (11, 23, etc.) will not help you.

OpenStudy (torvela):

jalil there are three information point the total cost, the book cost, and the t-shirt cost

OpenStudy (torvela):

which one of those do they not give you the cost of in the question

OpenStudy (jalil.h):

11

OpenStudy (torvela):

what does 11 stand for

OpenStudy (jalil.h):

x

OpenStudy (torvela):

no

OpenStudy (mathmale):

You are to find the cost of the t-shirt. You already know how much the book cost ($12) and how much, total, Leona spent. Please stop tossing out numbers until you have developed understanding of what they mean. You could use x to represent the cost of the t-shirt. The book cost $12. The total spent was $23. Write an equation involving x, $12 and $23, please.

OpenStudy (torvela):

ok you know that the book cost 12 and the total cost is 23 but they don't give you the cost of the t-shirt so which of those is the unknown value?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Look what jim_thompson typed to you: jim_thompson5910 Best Response Medals 0 cost of book = 12 cost of _____ = x total cost = 23 He is correct. How do you determine the value of x, which represents the cost of the t-shirt?

OpenStudy (torvela):

jalil have you read the lesson that this test is for?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

This plus that equals a total of $23. The t shirt cost x dollars. The book cost $12. The sum of the cost of the book and the cost of the t-shirt is $23. Write an equation showing this fact symbolically.

OpenStudy (torvela):

jalil what is the only thing they don't tell you the cost of in the question?

OpenStudy (jalil.h):

11

OpenStudy (torvela):

no it doesn't say 11 anywhere in the question

OpenStudy (torvela):

ok… let me re-explain

OpenStudy (jalil.h):

12+x=23

OpenStudy (torvela):

ok that's the equation but lets just start over

OpenStudy (torvela):

so...

OpenStudy (torvela):

you don't know what unknown values are right?

OpenStudy (jalil.h):

i have to go

OpenStudy (torvela):

ok

OpenStudy (jalil.h):

right now

OpenStudy (jalil.h):

can u give me the answers

OpenStudy (torvela):

the answer is t-shirt because it doesn't tell you how much the t-shirt costs

OpenStudy (torvela):

there for t-shirt is the unknown value

OpenStudy (jalil.h):

no like give me the answer so i can write it out

OpenStudy (torvela):

do you understand now

OpenStudy (torvela):

im not allowed to

OpenStudy (jalil.h):

help me wtire it out

OpenStudy (torvela):

ok which part do you not have

OpenStudy (jalil.h):

this how much space i got

OpenStudy (mathmale):

jalil: I'd really suggest you quit now and return later. You MUST be willing to show your work and to listen to suggestions from others about your work if you want to undrstand this algebra. No, jalil, we are not allowed to give you answers, especially when you have not demonstrated any work of your own.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

The original question has four parts. You must address each one of them, separately. We're still waiting to see evidence of your own efforts here. If you don't know, then at least phrase some questions that the rest of us could answer.
