tell me what you think so far
OpenStudy (jalil.h):
i think it a and b
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
choice A and choice B contradict each other
OpenStudy (jalil.h):
i meant D

idk

@AloneS
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
how many friends does Gary have?
OpenStudy (jalil.h):
5
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
if it costs say $7 to make a shirt, and he wants each friend to have 1 shirt, then how much will Gary spend in total?

you can think of it as
7+7 = 14
or
2*7 = 14
OpenStudy (jalil.h):
oh nvm 14
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
yes
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
how much would it cost to make 3 shirts?
OpenStudy (jalil.h):
21

yes, how about 4 shirts?
OpenStudy (jalil.h):
28
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
good. So we're multiplying the number of shirts with the cost
we have 5 shirts. We do NOT know the cost of the shirt ($7 was just an example)
so we just say that x is the cost of one shirt
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
if we have 5 shirts and each costs x dollars, then the total cost would be 5*x dollars. Agreed?
OpenStudy (jalil.h):
YES

sorry I should clarify things a bit.
x isn't the cost to Gary, it's the amount he's charging
x = amount Gary charges for one shirt (aka the amount of money Gary gets if he sells one shirt)
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
so he sells 5 shirts and earns 5*x dollars
if we subtract off the $25 he gives to his parents, then we'll have 5x-25 dollars left over. Agreed?
OpenStudy (jalil.h):
yes
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
how much does Gary have left over?
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
I'm looking for a number and not an algebraic expression

Fill in the blank: `After this, he was left with $______`
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
it's at the top of the problem
OpenStudy (jalil.h):

5x-25
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
do you see where it says `After this, he was left with $60` ??
OpenStudy (jalil.h):
oh ok
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
5x-25 represents what's left over
we are told that $60 is left over
so the two must be equal
ie.
5x-25 = 60
solve that for x to determine what Gary charges per shirt
OpenStudy (jalil.h):
umm idk

have you solved any linear equations before?
OpenStudy (jalil.h):
no
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
what you do is follow PEMDAS in reverse and undo everyting
start with the S in PEMDAS. We see that we have a subtraction in the equation because of the "minus 25"
what is the opposite of subtraction?
OpenStudy (jalil.h):
add
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
so we add what to both sides?
