OpenStudy (mssterehearts):

Should our answer always be positive when finding the distance of a line between two points? I think not, am I correct?

OpenStudy (kenrick143):

It could be negative or it could be positive coz it the distance's count is from left to right or right to left. Same with up to down and down to up.

OpenStudy (kenrick143):

Sorry for the grammar i forgot to check.

OpenStudy (mssterehearts):

Hm, actually the answer should always be positive, but Ill give you best response for trying c:

OpenStudy (kenrick143):

But we uses positive.. My bad, i was trying to say something yu know cant explain in words. Haha

OpenStudy (mr.hoot):

@kenrick143 Is wrong distance can never go into a negative number.

OpenStudy (phi):

the distance of a line between two points? This is one of those "definitions" questions. In other words, people have decided we always make distance positive.

OpenStudy (mr.hoot):

for example....

OpenStudy (phi):

you can calculate a negative number between for example 1 and 2 by doing 1-2 = -1 but by *definition* , we call the distance positive, and the calculation is really | 1-2| (or |2-1| ) where the | | means "absolute value"

OpenStudy (kenrick143):

Yeah sorry i was trying to say when counting backwards.
