I don't see your answer!

OpenStudy (alissax):

its clearly in the link. if you look closely i have written Y = 3x - 5

OpenStudy (alissax):

@ganeshie8

OpenStudy (welshfella):

you are correct

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Ok, I thought those are the supplied choices. Yes, the final answer is correct, as well as the derivation. Except.... the first line is written with improper parentheses. y-7/x-4=3 does not mean the same thing as (y-7)/(x-4)=3 You do not see the parentheses in most expressions in printed materials because the numerator and denominator are typeset and do not require parentheses, like this: \(\Large \frac{y-7}{x-4}=3\). When the expression is transcribed to a single line, or when you use a calculator, parentheses are needed to show exactly what is in the numerator and in the denominator. Without parentheses, it will be interpreted as y - (7/x) -4 =3 which is probably not what you mean.

@AlissaX Also, I prefer to start with your second line, which is the standard "point-slope form" for a line. The first line (with the division) has the problem that at the point (3,7), the left-hand side is indeterminate (0/0), while the second line says 0=3(0) which is OK.

Thank you

You're welcome! :)
