Fan + Medal At 12:00 p.m., Jane leaves her house and drives north to the beach. She arrives at 1:30 p.m. Also leaving at 12:00 p.m., her brother Paul leaves her house and drives south to a state park. He arrives at 2:30 p.m. The driving distance from the beach to the state park is 240 mi. Jane and Paul drove at the same speed. What was their speed?

OpenStudy (whovianchick):

Okay, so it took Jane 1.5 hours to get to the beach and Paul 2.5 hours to get to the state park. Since they're going the same speed, we can use that to find the distance they traveled. Imagine the hours as "x". 1.5x+2.5x= 240 4x=240 x=60 So, one hour is 60 miles. They were both going 60 miles per hour. We can check our work, too! Jane took 1.5 hours, or x, so we multiply 60 by 1.5, getting 90. Paul took 2.5 hours, or x, so we multiply 60 by 2.5, and get 150. 150+90=240, the total number of miles.
