OpenStudy (angles):

. If an atom has 14 protons, 12 neutrons, and 16 electrons, what is the atom's electrical charge?

OpenStudy (osprey):

the atom is now called an "ion" and has an excess of 2 electrons and so is negatively charged. I THINK that it's 1.6 x 10^-19 Coulombs per electron, so two of them is 3.2 x ... This atom you're writing about is DOUBLY IONISED, with, as said TWO unbalanced negative charges. COULD be something like the SO4 ion/radical in H2SO4, although the q refers to AN atom (ie NOT to a COLLECTION of atoms as in a radical). bon chance et bon voyage http://perendis.webs.com
