OpenStudy (banjoman):

Please help! ill medal! A machine your company owns has a value given by v = (-0.53)t + 5.7 where v is the value in thousands of dollars, t years from the date of purchase. Graph the equation and use the graph to estimate the value of the machine (in thousands of dollars) after 1.5 years. anyone have any ideas?

OpenStudy (jaedyn):

Is this middle

OpenStudy (mathmale):

The graph is a straight line. The y-intercept is 5.7; the slope is =-.53. Plot (0,5.7). Then, starting at this point, move 1 unit to the right along the t axis, and then down 0.53 unit. Plot a point there. Then connect the 2 points with a straight line.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Looking at your graph, find the vertical line where t=1.5 years. Where does this line intercept the one you drew earlier?

OpenStudy (banjoman):

I came up with 5,000 as the value according to my graph unless i did it wrong

OpenStudy (mathmale):

If you've graphed the value equation correctly, and also the vertical line thru 1.5 years, then the y-value can be taken from the intersection of your graph and the vertical line. Does $5,000 look reasonable to you?
