@jabez177

OpenStudy (alayrhi):

@mathmate

OpenStudy (alayrhi):

I know this is basically 5/8 - (-2/8)

OpenStudy (alayrhi):

Is the answer 3/8???

OpenStudy (alayrhi):

@ReaperG

OpenStudy (reaperg):

hm

OpenStudy (alayrhi):

The question is in the screenshot "capture.jpg"

OpenStudy (reaperg):

um ok let me see

OpenStudy (alayrhi):

@HelpWithK12 @aspenmurillo

OpenStudy (aspenmurillo):

no 3/8 is not the answer. two negatives make a positive.

OpenStudy (alayrhi):

But it's one negative.

OpenStudy (aspenmurillo):

the subtraction counts as a negative.

OpenStudy (alayrhi):

UM so then what's the answer?

OpenStudy (aspenmurillo):

To subtract fractions, find the LCD and then combine. Exact Form: 7 8 78 Decimal Form: 0.875

OpenStudy (aspenmurillo):

7/8

OpenStudy (alayrhi):

Im still confused but um thanks.

563blackghost (563blackghost):

You must change the denominators. We see that the denominator 4 can turn to 8 so we multiply it by 2. \(\huge\bf{-\frac{1}{4} \times 2 = -\frac{2}{8}}\) When subtracting a positive with a negative you will add the two. \(\huge\bf{\frac{5}{8} + \frac{2}{8} = \frac{7}{8}}\)

563blackghost (563blackghost):

Oops meant `-1/4 x 2/2 = - 2/8`

OpenStudy (aspenmurillo):

to subtract fractions you need to find the common denominator, which you did. two negatives make a positive so basically when you're subtracting a number with a negative, you can just add them together.

OpenStudy (alayrhi):

So that the answer? - 2/ 8 low-key starting to make sense

OpenStudy (aspenmurillo):

no the answer is 7/8

563blackghost (563blackghost):

No we turned `-1/4` into `-2/8` so we can simplify the two fractions.

OpenStudy (alayrhi):

That is what i did in the beginning. So i've had the right answer all along -_- but someone told me it wasn't

OpenStudy (aspenmurillo):

well they're wrong lol

OpenStudy (alayrhi):

xD thanks

OpenStudy (aspenmurillo):

when youre subtracting a positive with a negative, you just add them together\\\ example\[3/12 - (-1/12) = 4/12\]

OpenStudy (aspenmurillo):

no problem!

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

To subtract, add the opposite. Example: What is 6 - 8? To subtract 8 from 6, add the opposite of 8. The opposite of 8 is -8, so to subtract 8, you add -8 to 6. 6 - 8 = 6 + (-8) = -2 Another example: Now let's subtract a negative number using the same rule. 5 - (-2) To subtract -2, add the opposite of -2 which is 2. 5 - (-2) = 5 + 2 = 7

OpenStudy (mathmate):

@alayrhi What @mathstudent55 wrote will help you understand where you went wrong. Please read and ask questions if necessary .

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

By using a common denominator. You already know that \(\dfrac{5}{8} - (-\dfrac{1}{4}) = \dfrac{5}{8} - (-\dfrac{2}{8})\) Now apply the rule above for the subtraction subtraction. To subtract -2/8 from 5/8, add 2/8 to 5/8 \(\dfrac{5}{8} - (-\dfrac{1}{4}) = \dfrac{5}{8} - (-\dfrac{2}{8}) = \dfrac{5}{8} +\dfrac{2}{8} = \dfrac{7}{8} \)
