Because it is in group 2 of the periodic table you know that it have 2 valence electrons. The atomic number would be 12 because if you start counting from one at hydrogen and go right to left then you will get to 12 once you reach the unknown element. Lastly, elements will mostly resemble those in its group (up and down) so for example group 1 elements are called alkali metals and they have a very strong reaction in water. This characteristic fits throughout the entire group.
