Use the index laws - power raised to another power, and a product raised to a common power: \[(a^m)^n = a^{mn}\] \[(ab)^m = a^m b^m\] So for our case the power of 1/4 applies to both the m and n bases and we multiply the indices together (8 x 1/4 = 2 and -4 x 1/4 = -1): \[(m^8n^{-4})^{\frac{ 1 }{ 4 }} = m^2 n^{-1} \] Also note \[n^{-1} = \frac{ 1 }{ n }\] so our final answer is \[\frac{ m^2 }{ n }\] Make sure you can see the steps.
