"The Move" When Michelle's dad, an army lieutenant, was transferred to a new base in Fort Hood, Texas, her family had to pick up and move for the second time in three years. "Don't worry," her mother said. "You'll get used to the new school in no time." But everything about the school in Texas was different. The hallways were crowded, the cafeteria food was gross, all the tests were multiple-choice tests, and the teachers were stricter. Her least favorite time of day was the break between lunch and third period. All the students gathered on the football field's bleachers and separated into different groups. There were the punks in one area, the theater kids in another, the jocks near the back, the academics near the middle, and so on. Michelle felt as if she didn't belong to any of these groups, and so, she often suffered the embarrassment of sitting alone on the bleachers in the front. One day, while outside, Michelle was horrified to see a Cakeroach crawling around the bleachers near her. She screamed and then put her hand to her mouth self-consciously. Almost everyone had turned to stare at her. Gillian, a girl from her chemistry class, came over to ask Michelle if she was okay. "I'm fine," Michelle said nervously. "I just freaked out because I'm not used to Cakeroaches." Gillian glanced under the table. "You're not from around here, huh?" she said. "How could you tell?" Michelle asked. "Because here, Cakeroaches are a dime a dozen," Gillian said. "They adapt well to our climate. How about you?" "What about me?" Michelle said. "How are you adapting?" "All right, I guess," Michelle said. Gillian stood there, smiling, as though she expected Michelle to say something more. That was when Michelle realized the obvious: this was the perfect opportunity to make a new friend. "Hey, have you studied for the chemistry test yet?" Michelle asked her. Gillian shook her head. "No. And I didn't do that well on the last test." "Well, maybe we could study together later?" Michelle said. "Sure," Gillian said. "Meet you in the library later?" Michelle nodded. Which of the following best describe the inciting incident in the passage? A. Michelle is upset that her father is away from home. B. Her family has to move again in a short period of time. C. Her new school in Texas is very different. D. She encounters a disgusting bug.

ThisGirlPretty:

Hmmmm, @tigerlover What do you think o.o

tigerlover:

Not quiet what I would say. I would say C, considering her new environment and how she takes it all in at once which is too overwhelming for her.

ThisGirlPretty:

I was thinking either the third one or the last one because it was mainly talking about how she wasnt fitting into any groups, and about the different types of groups such as "Punk, theater kids, jocks etc

ThisGirlPretty:

She didn't eliminate the roach :P,

zarkam21:

Correct me if I'm wrong but shouldn't this be A?

zarkam21:

Isn't protagonist the "good" one?

ThisGirlPretty:

Hmmm, yes ^_^. The protagonist is also the main character in the story :D

mikewwe13:

protagonist is the leading part

zarkam21:

I guess you are right! =)

ThisGirlPretty:

But its good that you asked! :D

mikewwe13:

Which of the following best describes the resolution of the passage? A. Gillian eliminates the Potatoroach and prevents Michelle from experiencing further embarrassment. B. Michelle learns information about bugs in her new home. C. Michelle will perform well on her chemistry test. D. Michelle has found a friend and begun the process of fitting in.

mikewwe13:

but the answer is A

ThisGirlPretty:

Hmmm, what do you guys think?

mikewwe13:

A

ThisGirlPretty:

Her friend didn't eliminate the roach o.o she was screaming

mikewwe13:

oh ok then this D

ThisGirlPretty:

Yes, good work :D!

mikewwe13:

Which of the following best describes the point of view in this passage? A. 1st person because the protagonist tells the story. B. 1st person because there is dialogue. C. 3rd person limited because the narrator does not convey characters' thoughts. D. 3rd person omniscient because the narrator expresses the thoughts of more than 1 character.

ThisGirlPretty:

Hmmm, @zarkam21 @tigerlover ?

zarkam21:

Passage?

mikewwe13:

eliminate B, C, or D so maybe A

ThisGirlPretty:

The passage is up top ^^^^^

tigerlover:

I would say that the story is read in 3rd person

zarkam21:

Well first off, what is first person point of view? Give me an example

mikewwe13:

First person narrative is a point of view (who is telling a story) where the story is narrated by one character at a time. This character may be speaking about him or herself or sharing events that he or she is experiencing.

zarkam21:

Right, so they would probably use a sentence like this , "I am going to the store" Is this passage using first person ??

mikewwe13:

yes

zarkam21:

No, it is not

mikewwe13:

no

zarkam21:

Please pay attention to what I am asking you =)

zarkam21:

Is this passage using first person point of view? Is this passage saying anything like "I am very happy today" or "I was so upset"? In this passage, are the characters talking about themselves?

mikewwe13:

no

zarkam21:

Good

zarkam21:

Since we know this is not first person, which answers should we eliminate?

mikewwe13:

A and B

mikewwe13:

AND D

zarkam21:

Perfect!

zarkam21:

Which leaves us with C and D

zarkam21:

Hold on, lets take this step my step

zarkam21:

By*

zarkam21:

C. 3rd person limited because the narrator does not convey characters' thoughts. D. 3rd person omniscient because the narrator expresses the thoughts of more than 1 character.

zarkam21:

which one do you think it is and why?

mikewwe13:

It's definitely not D because considering what was going in the passage, omniscient means knowing everything and in the passage she didn't act like she didn't knew everything, she was more busy being sad and going through a rough time around new people, new environment, and getting to know new things so basically D isn't the answer so the every last point of evidence points to C as the answer

zarkam21:

Exactly!

zarkam21:

Good Job
