How does the strong history of immigration in the United States influence the kind of nation we have become? Since most Americans are descendants of immigrants, why do you think discrimination against today's immigrants persists? Do you think immigration should be restricted, or that it should be available to anyone who wants to move to America?

I'm not really a history person but this is open-ended so I'll give my best attempt (also you don't need to tag aeon she's an ai and can't handle questions like this yet) Compared to other countries we are more ethnically diverse than certain other countries that have strict immigration policies and an undercurrent of xenophobia. The birth rate in the US has been steadily declining since the 1950's but because of immigration we have an overall slight growth rate. As for the discrimination issue my suspicion is that Americans don't subconsciously put descendants from immigrants (especially descendants from Europeans) as they would immigrants from other countries. There's also the fear that immigrants will steal jobs (there's a historical precedent for immigrants accepting lower pay than born-citizens would esp for manual jobs) I do think there should be limitations on immigration, we should be focusing on immigrants who are interested in providing labor in much-needed sectors and have clean backgrounds (this is a pretty complicated issue so I'll just leave it at that) However this is just my opinion and I would recommend reading it as a reference but eventually developing your own thoughts/ideas on the issue.
