a ringing telephone Mrs. Frank’s scream

Hm, I wouldn't say a ringing telephone is one of them.

bemine11:

umm:

The only way I could describe a tense tone is possibly you wouldn't hear too much, or too often.

ok

Isry:

A tense tone is something that adds to the overall uneasy feeling. For instance if I want to write something to be tense I might say "The stairs creaked which would have been a familiar sound if not for the fact that no one was in the house or so Susie thought." The thought of someone else being in the house when no one is supposed to be in the house instantly adds tension to the piece. If I were to write "The stairs creaked and Susie heard her brother Connor laughing joyfully." The tension is suddenly cut because we know that Susie's brother Connor doesn't present a threat to Susie so suddenly it's no longer a tense situation. Hope this helps.
