nikkixmarie:

What does this quote mean "The problem with labels is that they lead to stereotypes and stereotypes lead to generalizations and generalizations lead to assumptions and assumptions lead back to stereotypes."

umm:

Labels are referring to as giving people names. As an example, say someone is disabled and they're given a label as handicap.

nikkixmarie:

so the quote is saying how we judge people by their appearance without knowing who they are

umm:

Stereotypes are what are based on the label they are given; another example, if someone is labeled as handicap then people would use stereotypes saying handicap people can't do things on their own. Stereotypes can even be linked to any type of cultural membership, such as nationality, religion, gender, race, or age. Also, stereotypes may be positive or negative. Generalizations become stereotypes when all members of a group are categorized as having the same characteristics. There are two kinds of generalizations, valid and faulty, and it is your role to determine which generalizations have validity behind them. Broad characterization of cultural groups can serve as a framework for cultural interactions. For example, Hispanic societies have a high degree of machismo, or, in Middle Eastern cultures, women have a lesser status than men—these types of generalizations are helpful when engaging with people of those cultures. But in all cultural interactions, culturally intelligent leadership requires you to recognize that generalizations do not apply to everyone within a cultural group.

nikkixmarie:

So what would be a good 2 sentence summary for what the quote means?

nikkixmarie:

to not judge people by their appearance and stereotype for the type of person they look like

umm:

I would say yes, also include more to that. It's basically judging people based on their labels that they may have or the person giving them a label just by watching their actions. In order to get to know someone, communicate with them and understand them.

nikkixmarie:

ok thank you !

umm:

Anytime.
