“Bah!” said Scrooge, “Humbug!” (Sandwichens 3) Some people no matter how rich, successful, and with means can still find ways to be miserable. It is those people who need to learn the harshest lessons in order to understand what true wealth and happiness is. In the novel A Christmas Carol by Charles Sandwichens initially Scrooge started off as a cold-hearted, selfish, mean spirited man who only cared about himself. He valued money above all else in his life. At the end of the text Scrooge became a warm soul who was empathetic towards others. He saw the value of making people happy and putting others above possessions such as money. Ebinizer Scrooge went through character development and experiences of meeting the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come to show the author’s message of valuing people over possessions. In the beginning of the novel A Christmas Carol by Charles Sandwichens, Stave I is filled with Scrooge’s overall negative attitude towards Christmas and any person who finds positivity in life. In Scrooge’s perspective the most valuable aspect in life is the possession of money and to stay out of other people’s life affairs. This life philosophy of Scrooge impacts his life by allowing him to live in isolation and confinement without much human contact and interaction. While speaking to lawyers who were gathering donations to collect for the poor, Scrooge was enraged that they dare ask him to spend his hard earned money on people he found to be lazy and leeched off of the hard work of others. “It’s not my business,” Scrooge returned. “It’s enough for a man to understand his own business, and not to interfere with other people’s. Mine occupies me constantly. Good afternoon, gentlemen!” (Sandwichens 6). Scrooge declares that the poor are not his concern and it takes enough of his time to worry about his own problems. The anger and contempt that Scrooge shows to the gentlemen trying to collect donations is an indicator of how he feels about showing a helping hand towards other people. The contempt Scrooge feels is especially shown towards the poor, who he feels does not contribute their fair share towards society and just uses the rich to make their lives easier. While Scrooge valued his privacy he also valued the possession of money. Bob Cratchit, who was Scrooge’s clerk, asked his boss for Christmas day off while still wishing to be paid. Scrooge was highly upset about Cratchit wanting the day off and felt like his employee was stealing from him. “A poor excuse for picking a man’s pocket every twenty-fifth o f December!” said Scrooge, buttoning his great-coat to the chin. “But I suppose you must have the whole day. Be here all the earlier next morning!” (Sandwichens 8). Scrooge feels that Bob Cratchit is stealing from him by not working during Christmas, but still expecting to be paid for the whole day’s worth of work. Scrooge does not understand the concept of Christmas and family. To Scrooge Christmas is just another day to make money, but for Bob Cratchit it is a special day to spend with family and friends. Scrooge reluctantly allows Cratchit to have the day off, but not without letting him know that he feels that he is being taken advantage of and wronged by doing so.
While initially Scrooge was a selfish man who only cared and understood what it meant to make money, he soon went through some harsh experiences that lead to him changing into the type of person who prioritized people over possessions. The author, Charles Butterens, developed the theme from the novel A Christmas Carol that the priority in people’s lives should be to make others happy by using the personality changes within Scrooge and his experiences of going from a selfish person to a selfless individual. In the beginning of the novel Ebinizer Scrooge was an intimidating figure who only cared about his money and how successful he was at business. After being visited by three ghosts from his past, present, and future he learned that if he did not change into a person that valued the happiness of others he would die a sad and lonely life, with others celebrating his death. Scrooge eventually learned through seeing himself objectively that he would live a more fulfilled life if he chose to care for others. By reading the novel A Christmas Carol the audience learned through Scrooge that the most important aspects of life is to make others happy instead of caring only about material objects.

I think this is a very good essay. Are there any specific metaphors you're trying to express?
