@snowflake0531

@AZ

AZ:

Pretty straightforward It's a quadratic equation so it's going to be in the form of y = (x-h)^2 + k where (h,k) is the vertex

AZ:

What is the vertex in your drawing? @NevaehJade6219 The vertex is the pointy point of the graph

\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @AZ What is the vertex in your drawing? @NevaehJade6219 The vertex is the pointy point of the graph \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) im not that dum

AZ:

It should be a point (x, y) x value, y-value

NevaehJade6219:

\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @AZ It should be a point (x, y) x value, y-value \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) oh -1,-6

AZ:

there you go

AZ:

so remember, I said (h, k) is the vertex in y = (x-h)^2 + k so you said the numbers are (-1, -6) so h = -1 and k = -6 can you put that into y = (x-h)^2 + k

NevaehJade6219:

ok y=(x-1)^2+-6?

snowflake0531:

no

AZ:

uhh check inside the parenthesis what happens when we're subtracting a negative number here's an example for you 2 - (-2) = 2 + 2

NevaehJade6219:

\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @AZ uhh check inside the parenthesis what happens when we're subtracting a negative number here's an example for you 2 - (-2) = 2 + 2 \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) oh yea sorry. y=(x(-1))^2+(-6)?

AZ:

no

AZ:

also pls don't quote/tag me in each reply, I already get a notification when you respond

AZ:

so y = (x - (-1)) ^2 + (-6) what is x - (-1)

AZ:

look at the example I gave you 2 - (-2) = 2 + 2

NevaehJade6219:

so h = -1 and k = -6 can you put that into y = (x-1)^2 + (-6)

NevaehJade6219:

srry i copy and pasted

NevaehJade6219:

y = (x-1)^2 + (-6)

snowflake0531:

no

AZ:

what did we say about It's (x - h) we said h is -1 so what is x - (-1) we need to get rid of these + - can't have two of them next to each other

NevaehJade6219:

x-1

AZ:

NOOOO

NevaehJade6219:

😭

snowflake0531:

negative and negative is positive positive and negative is negative

AZ:

look at my EXAMPLE x - (-523) x minus NEGATIVE 523 will be the same thing as x + 523 x PLUS 523

AZ:

so what is x - (-1)

NevaehJade6219:

1.70212766

snowflake0531:

hglaewkopghndtgsa

AZ:

x is a letter it's a variable, it's used to represent any possible number that it could stand for

NevaehJade6219:

now at this point i forgot what you wanted me to do

AZ:

We have y = (x - (-1)) ^2 + (-6) Do you see how we have the - and then again - when you see that, it becomes a + 5 - (-5) = 5 + 5 similarly x - (-3) = x + 3 so in our question, we have x - (-1) what is it??

NevaehJade6219:

x+1

snowflake0531:

YAY

NevaehJade6219:

🥺

AZ:

yes!! okay but don't get too excited, we still one last thing now we have y = (x +1) ^2 + (-6) do you see that something + (-6) so an example: 4 + (-3) = 4 - 3 51 + (-4) = 51 - 4 so y = (x+1)^2 + (-6) what would it be

AZ:

maybe a very much similar example y = (x+1)^2 + (-73) it would be y = (x+1)^2 - 73 so now your question is y = (x+1)^2 + (-6) what would it be?

NevaehJade6219:

(x+1)^2-6?

AZ:

tada!

NevaehJade6219:

ok. thank you again..

AZ:

You're welcome!

NevaehJade6219:

it says i got it wrong

AZ:

oh they want you to expand it too so do you know (a+b^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2 how would you expand (x+1)^2 =

AZ:

or if you do the FOIL method (x+1)(x+1) =

AZ:

wait

NevaehJade6219:

can we do the foil method

NevaehJade6219:

wait? ok.

AZ:

so we forgot a value on the outside y = A(x+1)^2 - 6 you see how they gave us that second point on your graph of (-2, -3) we need to plug in (-2, -3) and solve for that A so -3 = A(-2 + 1)^2 - 6 so what is -2 + 1 =

NevaehJade6219:

-1

AZ:

good and what is (-1)^2 or basically what is -1 * -1

NevaehJade6219:

-1

NevaehJade6219:

no just 1

AZ:

yes, it's just 1 so now we have -3 = A - 6 what is A? add 6 to both sides

AZ:

what is -3 + 6

NevaehJade6219:

+3

AZ:

good so that means A = 3 so the equation is y = 3(x+1)^2 - 6

AZ:

hopefully that's an acceptable answer and they don't want you to like expand it

NevaehJade6219:

correct! WOOPIE!! thanks!

AZ:

Yay :D
