Kyky232:

Quinn is flying a kite. The angle of elevation formed by the kite string and the ground is 40°, and the kite string forms a straight segment that is 100 feet long. Explain how to find the distance between the ground and the kite. Include a description of the triangle you drew to help you solve, including the variables and measurements you assigned to each side and angle. Round your answer to the nearest foot.

Kyky232:

@AZ

AZ:

so angle of elevation means you're looking up |dw:1616954050651:dw| does this drawing make sense?

AZ:

how would you solve for x? @Kyky232

Kyky232:

youd use cosine?

AZ:

you got it!

jhonyy9:

Explain how to find the distance between the ground and the kite. so i think x not will be the right answer @AZ

AZ:

oh, you're right I misinterpreted the question

AZ:

|dw:1616955957199:dw| we're looking for the distance from the ground to the kite

Kyky232:

that's just sine right?

Kyky232:

itd be sin(40)= x/100

AZ:

Yup! Just sin

Kyky232:

can someone check this For this you would use sine. The equation would be sin(40)= x/100. I multiplied 100 on both sides. This left me with 100* sin(40)= x. When you simplify this, you get 64.2787609687. But to get the final answer you round your answer to the nearest foot, which would be 64. The hypotenuse was labeled 100 ft, the opposite was labeled “x”, and the adjacent was labeled "y".

Kyky232:

does that sound okay?

AZ:

Sounds good to me!
