Astrid1:

Circle the letter of each sentence that is true about particles in a solution. a. When an ionic solid mixes with water, its ions repel water molecules. b. When a molecular solid mixes with water, the covalent bonds within molecules are broken. c. When an ionic solid mixes with water, water molecules surround each ion. d. When a molecular solid mixes with water, the solute breaks down into individual molecules.

Rx1nyDxyz:

I think it's C.

Astrid1:

Okay.. but can you explain?

Rx1nyDxyz:

I'm not very good at explaining, but i'll try.

Rx1nyDxyz:

When you put an ionic compound in water, the ions become attracted to the water molecules, and each of them has a polar charge.

Rx1nyDxyz:

If the attraction between the ions and the water molecules is big enough to break the bonds that hold the ions together, the compound will dissolve.

Rx1nyDxyz:

I hope that's understandable.

Astrid1:

Makes sense, thanks for explaining o:

Rx1nyDxyz:

Yw :)
