First....What is an argumentative essay? An argumentative essay is a piece of writing that it used to take a stance on a topic, show your opinion on a topic important to you. In this piece you will be trying to convince/persuade a reader to understand your point of view. Outline/Brainstorm First paragraph: This should be a introductory paragraph to show the reader what you are writing about. This paragraph should be used to help the reader get a understanding of what you are writing and a general background of the topic. This is where you should being stating your thesis. Thesis "paragraph": This paragraph should be used to state your thesis. This should be part of the introductory paragraph and should be generally concise. This should be about one sentence long stating the main point of the piece. Body paragraphs: You should have at least 3/4 body paragraphs in a essay. These paragraphs should do the job of explaining/supporting your main thesis. These body paragraphs should cover a different supporting detail or idea surrounding your thesis. A good body paragraph should contain a topic sentence {Which should explain why to support your topic}. It should also include examples of things that back-up/support your claim. {Graphs,Charts, Data, Text citations}. Make sure to address opposing views and explain why they are "incorrect" to the thesis you have. Last paragraph: Conclusion As you would in a regular essay a conclusion should be the same here. This paragraph should be about restating your thesis. This should also be about summarizing all topics stated in your body paragraphs. This paragraph should be used to wrap up the general idea of the piece and help the reader understand how the topic affects them. Types of argument claims: 1) Value: Why are you writing this argument 2) Cause and effect: What causes the problem of the piece and the effects it has. 3) Fact: Whether the statement is true or false. Lastly: Make sure to cite sources!!!
