The map shows changes to the lionfish population in the Atlantic in recent years. Lionfish are a popular marine ornamental fish and were possibly intentionally released into the Atlantic. Native to Pacific waters, the first lionfish was reported in South Florida waters in 1985 with many additional sightings occurring until they were documented as established in the early 2000s. Lionfish are slow-moving and conspicuous, so they must rely on their unusual coloration and fins to discourage would-be predators from eating them. Select ALL of the ways lionfish negatively affect the biodiversity of the Atlantic ecosystem. A) Lionfish cause eutrophication in the warm Atlantic waters. B) The lionfish is a top predator, taking food from other native species. C) Lionfish will can kill off helpful species such as algae-eating parrotfish, allowing seaweed to overtake the reefs. D) Lionfish are a growing source of food, causing overfishing in their new Atlantic home, disrupting the native food chain. E) The lionfish has no known predators in the Atlantic, allowing the population size to grow rapidly, competing with native species for habitat space.
