AZ:

To be diagnosed with depression, you need to have 5 of the following symptoms for a period longer than 2 weeks. This is according to the DSM-V At least one of the five symptoms has to be depressed mood OR loss of interest/pleasure 1. Depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day. 2. Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in all, or almost all, activities most of the day, nearly every day. 3. Significant weight loss when not dieting or weight gain, or decrease or increase in appetite nearly every day. 4. A slowing down of thought and a reduction of physical movement (observable by others, not merely subjective feelings of restlessness or being slowed down). 5. Fatigue or loss of energy nearly every day. 6. Feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt nearly every day. 7. Diminished ability to think or concentrate, or indecisiveness, nearly every day. 8. Recurrent thoughts of death, recurrent suicidal ideation without a specific plan, or a suicide attempt or a specific plan for committing suicide. copied the diagnostic criteria from: https://www.psycom.net/depression-definition-dsm-5-diagnostic-criteria/

So does Abe have depression? Does the question tell us he's fatigued? Or he has suicidal ideation? Or any significant weight change? All we know is that he lost his house and he wishes he could do things differently

When you look up complicated grief, you'll find that it relates to losing a loved one. But I'm sure it can also be applied to losing something big such as a house Read the symptoms of complicated grief that I pulled from the Mayo Clinic: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/complicated-grief/symptoms-causes/syc-20360374

MayoClinic Website wrote:
Signs and symptoms of complicated grief may include: Intense sorrow, pain and rumination over the loss of your loved one Focus on little else but your loved one's death Extreme focus on reminders of the loved one or excessive avoidance of reminders Intense and persistent longing or pining for the deceased Problems accepting the death Numbness or detachment Bitterness about your loss Feeling that life holds no meaning or purpose Lack of trust in others Inability to enjoy life or think back on positive experiences with your loved one Complicated grief also may be indicated if you continue to: Have trouble carrying out normal routines Isolate from others and withdraw from social activities Experience depression, deep sadness, guilt or self-blame Believe that you did something wrong or could have prevented the death Feel life isn't worth living without your loved one Wish you had died along with your loved one

After reading all that... what does it sound like Abe has?

HeartTricker:

To be diagnosed with depression, you need to have FIVE out of that list of 8 things I mentioned above Is Abe depressed? Be careful, in today's age we all use the word depressed casually "Oh little Tommy failed his Biology exam so he's depressed" No... Tommy isn't depressed. He's just sad and he'll be over it by tomorrow morning. But if Tommy isn't over it in 2 weeks and he's lost 15 pounds and he's contemplating suicide now. He hasn't left his bedroom at all and he thinks he's dumb and life isn't worth living. Yeah, Tommy has something going on and it's probably depression
