This is a tricky word problem We have a one mile long train We have a tunnel of unknown length that we're trying to calculate It takes 3 minutes when the head of the train ENTERS the tunnel to when the end of the train EXITS the tunnel so when the head of the train enters the tunnel, since it's a mile long train that means the tail is 1 mile from the entrance of the tunnel and then by the time it the end of the train reaches the end of the tunnel, it has travelled that one mile to reach the entrance and then the distance from the beginning of the tunnel to the end of the tunnel Does that make sense so far?

AZ:

So the total distance travelled in 3 minutes is how many miles the tunnel is + 1 mile of the train that's outside tunnel distance + 1 mile and it's moving at a speed of 60 mph speed = distance / time the speed is 60 miles/hour distance is t + 1 time is 3 minutes so you'd want to convert that to hours

AZ:

So it took 3 minutes from the beginning of the train at the front of the tunnel for the end of the train to reach the end of the tunnel You can see how that distance is t + 1 |dw:1621294336365:dw|

so if seed is 60 then 60=distance/time but how do i find distance and time?

crispyrat:

well ok so the train travels 1 mile per second if it took 3 mile for the train to reach the end and have its head pop out then the rest is 3 miles meaning the 1+t= 3 miles so t=2 meaning the tunnel is 2 miles long

AZ:

60 miles per hour 60 miles per 60 minutes 1 mile per minute not per second? But yeah, you got the right answer 1 mile per minute = (t+1) miles / (3 mins) 3 miles = t + 1 miles t = 2 miles
