Tammerz:

Ellis is painting wooden fenceposts before putting them in his yard. They are each 5 feet tall and have a diameter of 1 foot. There are 10 fenceposts in all. How much paint will Ellis need to paint all the surfaces of the 10 fenceposts? Use 3.14 for π, and round your answer to the nearest hundredth. Provide an explanation and proof for your answer to receive full credit.

zunairah:

are you trying to find the area

zunairah:

or the volume

Tammerz:

I need to find the SA

zunairah:

surafce area

Tammerz:

yeah

zunairah:

okay so what shape is it

Tammerz:

It doesn't tell me

Tammerz:

Im assuming its a rectangle

zunairah:

i thought it was a cylinder

Tammerz:

Yea idk maybe

zunairah:

okay so sayng its a cylinder

zunairah:

do you know how to find the radius from the diameter?

Tammerz:

Divide it by 2

zunairah:

ye

zunairah:

So for the formula for finding it is

zunairah:

2(3.14)rh^2 + 2(3.14)rh^2

zunairah:

you know what they stand for right

Tammerz:

R = Radius H = Height

zunairah:

yes

zunairah:

So first find the SA for 1 fencepost

Tonycoolkid21:

the fenceposts are shaped like cylinders, I presume. it states that all the surfaces of all the cylinders must be painted, so I presume you just need to calculate the surface area of 10 cylinders with the given dimensions SA = 2(pi)(r)(h) + 2(pi)r^2 plug in the radius, height, and find SA, then multiply by 10 fenceposts.

Tammerz:

so the radius is .5

zunairah:

yeah

Tonycoolkid21:

the units are feet, so the units of SA are square feet I haven't checked the calculation yet, but assuming your answer is correct, 172.2 square feet of paint

zunairah:

yah this is what u do props to this dude

Tammerz:

Tony why you copy-paste from the other question I saw that confused me

Tammerz:

zuna thanks you for doing it slow with me so I could understand

zunairah:

your welcome

Tammerz:

alright so i got 17.27 from using the formula

Tammerz:

and then i just multiply by 10

zunairah:

17.27 for once fencepost so then you just multiply it by 10 to find it for All the fenceposts

zunairah:

yeah u right
