Think back to the events that take place in "The Cask of Amontillado," and think about the attitudes and actions of the characters. Now, write a theme statement for "The Cask of Amontillado."

umm:

If you remember the small summary of my explanation on your last post, do you remember some of the actions that were done?

Anonymous1babes:

yea

umm:

Okay, so what are a few characteristics would you say you've noticed. Remember, how Montresor felt towards Fortunato?

Anonymous1babes:

Montresor feels wronged by Fortunato because of some insulting remark or action Fortunato made toward him i think

umm:

Yes, he was `hurt`, and because of it he wanted revenge, and normally people are `angry` and taking it out on things, but in Montresor's position, he took it out on Fortunato and killed him.

umm:

How do you think Fortunato felt, and what did Montresor convince him about?

Anonymous1babes:

i think Fortunato felt silly in a way because of what he did

umm:

If you need a reference, here's the short summary I have in your previous post. The moral of the story, Montresor wanted revenge with Fortunato for ruining his life and sought out to kill him. By doing so, he got Fortunato drunk in his wine cellar and took him deeper into the winer cellar and buried him alive.

Ah, with evidence from the story, I wouldn't say I agree with that. Evidence shows that he got intoxicated/drunk, plus he was fooled by Montresor's action for telling him about a special wine.

Anonymous1babes:

ohhh yea so not silly maybe angry with the way that the other guy made it seem like it was "special wine"

umm:

Here's part of the story, does this explain how Fortunato felt? "Go on,” I said. “Go in; the Amontillado is in there.” Fortunato continued to go forward, uncertainly. I followed him immediately. Soon, of course, he reached the back wall. He stood there a moment, facing the wall, surprised and wondering.

Anonymous1babes:

yes thank u

umm:

Okay, can you write out what your answer may be? If necessary, I can review it and continue to assist.

Anonymous1babes:

yes no problem

Anonymous1babes:

In the end of "The Cask of Amontillado" Montresor kills Fortunato but begins to feel guilt which makes you believe maybe revenge was not the best idea because guilt is a terrible feeling. I wrote this down but im not sure if its correct

umm:

I personally agree with this. If I may add in. In the beginning of "The Cask of Amontillado", Montresor if overcome with anger that he has the need to get revenge on Fortunato for hurting him in his past. So, by doing so, Montresor convinces Fortunato to join him in his wine cellar to find a special wine of his, but as they go deeper into the wine cellar, Fortunato becomes intoxicated/drunk, and also becomes curious as to how much further they have to go, as well as surprised once they have reached the end. Montresor decided to use it to his advantage to start burying Fortunato alive, and as soon as Montresor realized what he has done, he's overcomeed with grief and shock.

umm:

If you'd like, you may use that. (:
