US History - Read this question: "If representation in Congress is to be determined by the number of people who live in each state, should slaves be counted?" At the Constitutional Convention, how would someone from a Southern state most likely respond? A. Yes, they live in our state, and they should be counted. B. Yes, they are equal to white people and should be counted. C. No, slaves were not born in the states and should not be counted. D. No, slaves are not equal to white people and should not be counted.

dukedadon:

https://www.jiskha.com/ . states : "No. The voters wanted everyone counted so they would have more representatives in Congress."

dukedadon:

does this answer your question, carmelle?

carmelle:

so its either A or B, im thinking..

dukedadon:

B would be your correct answer (:

carmelle:

alright, but do you have some type of explanation on why'd it be correct?

LostLegacy06:

i thought it was D because the constitution convention was a long time ago back in the 1700's where slaves and white people werent equals

look up the 3/5 compromise, it explains everything.

yeah but the convention was before the 3/5 compromise

carmelle:

ok but if your reasoning is the 3/5 compromise then it wouldn't be B, since people in the south didnt consider people of color as equals...

LostLegacy06:

and remember it says from the 'South' and the south did not approve of slaves being counted equal what so ever

Hmm. The 3/5 compromise consisted of :three-fifths of the slave population would be counted for determining direct taxation and representation in the House of Representatives. So in this term, they were counted, but in a different form or way

carmelle:

then wouldn't the answer be A?

LostLegacy06:

The key point in the question isn't asking about the 3/5 compromise or the convention its asking what would the south say

LostLegacy06:

in that convention and the South had an abundance of slaves and didnt want to give them up bc they needed them

LostLegacy06:

now if it said the north it would be a totally different story

its D-

carmelle:

how is it D, I thought the south wanted the slaves to be counted?

LostLegacy06:

noo the south didnt want the slaves to be counted

LostLegacy06:

they needed them

LostLegacy06:

so if they were to say something at the convention they would say "No, slaves are not equal to white people and should not be counted."

dukedadon:

this is making my brain hurt, haven't talked about this sense like freshman yr of hs lol

LostLegacy06:

I have a pretty good recollection of this topic and slaves

carmelle:
