Sailor:

Substitution is when you want to have one variable canceled out in order to solve the equation. None of the variables are the same so you have to multiply one of the equations to make one of the variables the same.

makaylab:

ok can you show me how plz

Sailor:

Sure let me find an example.

makaylab:

ok!

Sailor:

I found a video that shows a problem related to the one your working with right now, will that work?

makaylab:

mhm!

makaylab:

ok! Ummm it is kinda confusing me

Sailor:

So when you have to multiply an equation to make a variable the same, one variable has to be positive in the first equation, and in the second equation has to be negative. For example, if you choose to eliminate x, you would multiply the first equation by 5 and the second equation by -3.

Sailor:

Just remember these: negative x negative = positive negative x positive= negative positive x positive= positive positive x negative = negative
