INTRODUCTION It was late at night when my parents decided to tell me that we were moving. And by moving, I mean from my hometown in Africa all the way to India. When they told me I was very mad. What if it’s no fun where we’re going. What if the kids are mean. I’m REALLY nervous. The first ancient Indian civilization began in 2500 BCE and ended when it fell in 1800 BCE. (Green, 13) GEOGRAPHY “In the 1920s, Archaeologists made an astonishing discovery. They found the remains of two great cities near the Indus River in northwestern India. The cities were called Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa.” (Ali, 10) India is located in South-Central Asia. The people of ancient India adapted to their environment because of the Indus River. The Indus river provided water to drink, and mud to make bricks for houses. Some examples of physical features are deserts, fertile plants, and plateaus. The climate of Ancient India was very hot and dry. (Williams, 9) GOVERNMENT In 335c-415c a king named Chandragupta founded the Gupta empire. Chandragupta was India’s first ruler. He came into power because of the coming of the Aryans. Chandragupta was born in 340 B.C.E. He became king when he turned 21 in 321 B.C.E. There were many rulers after Chandragupta, including Ajatasatru (512-461 BCE), Samudragupta (315-380 B.C.E.), Akbar I (1542-1605), Krishnadevaraya (1471-1529), Raja Raja Chola I (947-1014), Pulakesi II (610-642), Ashoka (304-232 BCE), Shivaji Bhonsle (1627-1680), Aurangzeb (1658-1717), and many more. (Ali, 10) ECONOMICS The people of ancient India traded with China and west Asia. They sold gold to west Asia. West Asia took the gold and gave India glass and wool. India then took the glass and wool and traded it to China for silk and pottery. India took China’s silk and pottery to sell to west Asia. India also sold things like medicines and pearls, and spices like cinnamon and black pepper. Around 600 B.C. India started trading with ships. (Washingington, 7) VALUES AND BELIEFS “Hinduism is the oldest religion in India. In fact, some of the Hindu gods were most likely worshiped by the people of ancient Harappa. When the Aryans came into India, they brought their beliefs, and the stories of their gods in their holy book, the Rig Veda.”(History for Kids) The first form of worship in India. Scientists believe that hinduism began sometime between 2300 B.C. and 1500 B.C. Buddhism is another form of worship. Buddhism is believed to be from around 483 B.C. The people of ancient India practiced buddhism by the Indus river and hinduism in the Indus valley. People still practice both Hinduism and Buddhism today. (Loftin, 11) CONTRIBUTIONS Many of the things we use today, you would never think that they went back a long time. Some examples of everyday objects and systems that originated in ancient India are some of the first universities, the decimal system, snakes and ladders and chess, shampoo, toilet systems, information about the solar system, the idea of mining for diamonds, and yoga. One of the best known ancient universities was a buddhist learning center named Nalanda. Yes, the ancient Indians actually invented the decimal system. The first games of chess started in the sixth century A.D., while snakes and ladders, also known as chutes and ladders, began in the second century B.C. Shampoo was originally made from mixing different herbs and oils and is now a bit different, but is still very much alike. The Indus valley civilization was very organized, and created the first toilet systems. These are only a few examples of the many things that ancient India first created that influence our life today. (WorldAtlas) ARCHITECTURE Some examples of architecture you might have found in ancient India are temple architecture, Mughal architecture, Dravidian architecture, Sikh architecture, and cave architecture. Many early Indian buildings were made of wood, which is usually old and worn out and bricks that have been taken off of buildings to reuse. (Artshelp) FAMOUS PEOPLE There were many famous people in ancient India, but a few of the most important people are Shah Jahan, Ashoka, Babur, and Akbar. Shah Jahan was famous for being a great patron of architecture. Ashoka was the ruler of India’s first empire in the third century B.C.E. and was also a buddhist. Babur founded the Mughal empire in early 1500 and his grandson, Akbar was a politician and a soldier. (Ali, 15) INTERESTING FACTS India is very interesting in some ways. Scientists still wonder about some of its features. Some interesting facts about India are that India never invaded any country in her last 10000 years of history, cows are considered sacred in India, India is the wettest inhabited place on Earth, India has over 2 million Hindu temples, and India has 22 recognized languages. (Globotreks) CONCLUSION The first Indian civilization ended in 1800 BCE because of climate change. The main reason for climate change could have been the Saraswati river started drying up, or the reason could be because of a great flood. Well, I am glad to conclude that I survived the trip to India, and everybody is super nice here. I’ve been having a great time. I even have twelve new friends!
