nettym:

can someone help me identify a metaphor in this excerpt: Yet, it was clear that, for them, I was only Sonny’s brother. Here, I was in Sonny’s world. Or, rather: his (world, kingdom, empire). (“Sonny’s Blues”)

nettym:

if you cannot help me, refrain yourself from commenting please and thank you .!

Sherixn:

I have a feeling it's "I was in Sonny's world"

Sherixn:

I cannot say for sure

nettym:

okay well ty for trying to help.

Shadow:

@nettym Is this multiple choice?

nettym:

unfortunately no, it is just asking to identify the metaphor and then give a brief explanation on why its meaningful to the excerpt

Shadow:

"world, kingdom, empire" are you supposed to choose between these words?

Shadow:

I don't know the book but I looked up the quote and it seems "kingdom" is what is used in that phrase, so the parentheses is a bit weird. Anyway, A metaphor is basically when you apply a word to another where it isn't literally applicable. For example: "She shone bright, the sun beating back the shadows." Here, 'She' is being likened to the 'sun.' However 'she' isn't literally the sun, it's just the figurative expression of a metaphor. So here, you could say that the world isn't literally a kingdom, it's just being likened to one.
