During the Axial Age, between 800 and 200 BCE, India underwent significant cultural, philosophical, and religious changes. This period was marked by a shift away from a focus on external rituals and sacrifices, towards an emphasis on introspection, meditation, and inner transformation. One of the most significant developments during this time was the emergence of new philosophical and religious traditions, such as Jainism and Buddhism, which challenged the established Hindu orthodoxy. These traditions emphasized the importance of personal morality and ethical behavior, and rejected the authority of the Brahmin priesthood. The Upanishads, a collection of philosophical texts that form the core of Hinduism, reflect these changes in Indian thought. They emphasize the importance of self-knowledge and personal spiritual experience, and challenge the traditional Vedic rituals and sacrifices. The Upanishads also introduce the concept of Brahman, the divine reality that underlies all existence, and Atman, the individual self which is identical with Brahman. They teach that true liberation and enlightenment can be attained through the realization of this ultimate reality, and through the cultivation of virtues such as compassion, non-violence, and detachment from material desires. Overall, the cultural, philosophical, and religious changes that occurred during the Axial Age in India had a profound impact on Indian thought and continue to influence the country's culture and spirituality today.
