Oh wow. OK (a + b)^6 means (a + b)(a + b)(a + b)(a + b)(a + b)(a + b). So take it one at a time. (a + b)(a + b) = ? Can you FOIL it out?

Not quite. Let's try this. (x + 1)(x + 1) = x(x + 1) + 1(x + 1). So (x + 1)(x + 1) = x^2 + x + x + 1 = x^2 + 2x + 1. So (a + b)(a + b) = a(a + b) + b(a + b) = a^2 + ab + ba + b^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2
(x + 1)(x + 1) = x(x + 1) + 1(x + 1), that's distributing the multiplication.
I'm not sure what your teacher wants you to do. Doing the multiplication out directly seems like busywork.
