16^(3X)=8^(X+1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Take the natural log of both sides. Then,\[\ln(16^{3x})=\ln(8^{x+1})\]So that\[3x{\ln(16)}=(x+1)\ln{(8)}\]But 16=2^4 and 8=2^3,so\[3.4\ln(2)x=3\ln(2)x+3\ln(2)\]Collecting like-terms leads to\[9\ln(2)x=3\ln(2) \rightarrow x=\frac{3\ln(2)}{9\ln(2)}=\frac{1}{3}\]

Note, you could take any log you like - it won't matter in the end. I just chose 'ln' since people feel more comfortable with it.
