Find the value of k so that the remainder of (-kx^4-146x^2+32)/(x-4) is 0
Are you doing long division right now? Or are you factoring?
I was tryin to do synthetic division...failed epically. I did this on a quiz before, but it wasn't at all how we supposed to do it, I just rationalized it out...but now I don't remember how I did it. And I don't have my book with me, test tomo...ya not a good deal
wht class r u in?
pre-calc...the highest that math goes at my school. fml in college!
Just a minute.. I will get this
lol no worries i worked on it for about 45 minutes. i'm working on other problems, so take ur time
OK.. I think I have it... it is a weird answer. Synthetic division... You would use 4 4 X 0 -146 0 32 -36 144 -8 -32 -9 36 -2 -8 0 so the x = 9 because there is already a - sign in the problem. Do you want to know how I did it?
Thank you sooo much but...I could have definitely done this by myself. i forgot the ZEROS!!! ok lol well thanks, i think I got it from here. actually, just to make sure, ya run me through it please
4 x 0 -146 0 32 because you want the answer 0 there needs to be a 0 0 right there so what do you need to put between the two so it adds to 0 4 x 0 -146 0 32 -32 0
ok. and then just work backwards from there?
Now how does a -32 get in that spot.. it comes from 4 * ( ) that is in the bottom of the next to last column 4 x 0 -146 0 32 -32 -8 0
Then what do you have to put in to make it add to (-8) 4 x 0 -146 0 32 8 -32 2 -8 0 Etc. make sure you know you just bring down the x for the first step.
ah...and it didn't help my case any that I wrote 36 on my paper instead of 32. I see now, it was just a problem of overcomplicating things, and small mistakes that messed me up. Thanks!
