The length L is given by: \[L=\sqrt{(5-(-3))^2+(-1-2)^2}=\sqrt{8^2+(-3)^2}=\sqrt{64+9}=\sqrt{73}\]

So, you take the square of the difference of the x's coordinates , add it to the square of the difference of the y's coordinates. And then, square the whole number. You have to be careful with signs. Does that make sense?
