the difference quotient is \[\frac{f(x+h) - f(x)}{h}\] So plug in x+h for x in f(x) for the first term in the numerator, and just plug in f(x) for the second term, then simplify.

[(x+h)^2 - 2(x+h) + 5] - [x^2 - 2x + 5] / h
