Inertia is the resistance of any physical object to a change in its state of motion or rest, or the tendency of an object to resist any change in its motion. It is proportional to an object's mass.

I always think of inertia as an object's resistance to a change in motion. In Newton's Second Law of motion, (Force) = (Mass) x (Acceleration), the mass is more specifically called the "inertial mass." It is the constant of proportionality between the net force upon and object and the acceleration (change in motion) that that object is subject to. Take, for example, an object with a small mass. This object feels a certain force, and according to Newton's Second Law of motion, it feels an acceleration. Imagine now a second object, with a mass twice that of the first. If the same force is exerted upon the both objects, the second (more massive) object would accelerate less than the first, because it has more inertia - more resistance to change in motion.
