OpenStudy (mathsadness):

Solve |1-2x| > x+1

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

Graph \[y_1 = |1-2x|\] and \[y_2=x+1\] Find the intervals where \(y_1\) is above \(y_2\), and that's that. :)

OpenStudy (mathsadness):

without graphing?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

|1-2x| = (1-2x) AND (-1+2x) 1-2x > x+1 -1+2x>x+1 0 > 3x 3x > 2 0>x x > 2/3

OpenStudy (amistre64):

ugh..... that left is off

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

Nicely done! Here is the pic to tie it all together. :)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

-1+2x > x+1 ; -x and +1 x > 2

OpenStudy (amistre64):

(-inf,0) U (2,inf)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

another way to do this is to square both sides to find the critical points in this case 0 and 2 and to test for x <0, 0<x<2, and x>2 .
