How do I set this up? Given a cylinder with a surface area of 60 π units squared and a height of 7 units. Find the volume of a sphere that has the same size radius as the given cylinder. Show all work.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The surface area of a cylinder is 2(pi)r*h. You know the height so solve for the radius. The volume of a sphere is (4/3)pi r^3. Then you can plug in the radius to solve for the volume.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what malevolence said.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@malevolence where do i put 60π? or is that useless info.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

60π is the surface area of the cylinder, that means 2πrh =60π

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i see. thank you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You would have: 60π=2πr(7) 60π=14πr r=60/14

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

wouldnt the surface area be 2pi*r^2 + 2pi*r*h if you include the top/bottom

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, dumbcow makes a good point, either way, you can still find the radius of the cylinder

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so wait which formula do i use?

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

do they give a picture? usually it will say if its an open cylinder

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No picture on this problem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think there is a difference between surface area and TOTAL surface area. if it is surface area, you use 2πrh, if it is total surface area use 2πrh+2πr^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I may be wrong. be on the safe side and use dumbcow's formula

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

assuming total surface area, it comes out nicely r=3 volume = 36pi

OpenStudy (anonymous):

perfect! Thank You All So much!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Nancy Lam, are you there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my computer go slow and some time don't let me post

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank You!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ty

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have to rewrite many time that why my answer take so long " I'm not happy with my internet

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well thank you so much for your time and effort!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You make it very easy to understand and follow.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nancy, you made a mistake there. it is 14πr + 2πr^2 you cannot subtract 60π-14π

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think I 'm right ,Mrbonez321 u want me write again, I did delete?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got it, but thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well that's the difference in surface area and LATERAL area.
