Is there an easy way to keep track of the possible oxidation states of the transition metals?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya the only way is to read the o-states given out in the books...they never change...i dont think theres another shortcut

Harsh. Thanks.

For some transition metals you can tell their oxidation states ny looking at outer electronic configuration Manganese for example has 4s2 3d5 outer config. It can lose the two s eletrons to form a 3d 5 system which is stable due to half filled stability. But yeah it is very tough to generalise so it is best learnt rote.

Thank you much.
